Samar (سمر) (Arabic): to sit together in conversation at sunset.
We talk; sitting face to face, at the table, while I’m cooking, while you’re finishing up some work, while walking. We talk while watching the sky, waiting for the fox, watching the river go where it goes, listening to the wind in the branches. We talk on the phone, in snatches, through questions and overheard conversations (it’s Jeff…), through photographs and pictures and books. We talk in song lyrics, through the music–in both the notes and the silence, we talk.
